Drew Witt

Lead Pastor

I was born on a Thursday morning in November and in the church nursery on the following Sunday. Seriously. I'm a church kid and I've seen the best and worst in church life. But I'm still convinced that when people love God and one another, great things can happen in and through the local church.

In addition to being a pastor, I am also a maker, woodworker, graphic designer, abstract painter, entrepreneur, musician, and lawn care aficionado. I think I like to make stuff. Not sure. Since 2002, my main passion has been to creatively speak the words of life in a way that would produce mature disciples instead of religious nuts. Talking about Jesus and being a tour guide of the Scriptures are my favorite things to do.

I grew up in Wichita Falls, TX where I met and married my high school sweetheart in 2005. In 2007, Shari and I moved to San Antonio to help John & Stephanie Van Pay start Gateway Fellowship in Helotes, TX. After serving as the Worship Pastor there for four years, they sent us out in 2012 to plant a church downtown.

In June of 2012, we gathered five of our friends and started The Gathering Church. We simply ate a meal together and prayed in San Pedro Park. Our first prayer was “Lord, what are you already doing, and how can we join it?” Our consistent goal has been to create a warm, loving, local, and compassionate expression of Jesus’ Church in the center of our city that would bring hope to people.

In 2017, I transitioned from being a pastor in the Assemblies of God to being an ordained priest in the Anglican Mission in America. Long story. You can read about it here and here.

Along the way, God blessed us with two boys - Hayden James and Grayson James. They are bundles of joy and energy, and I consider them my most important church plant.

I like U2, Dr. Pepper, Nate Bargatze, Jerry Seinfeld, weak coffee, This Old House, the Dallas Cowboys (remember when Jimmy was the coach?), Tom Brady (don't hate), and of course, the San Antonio Spurs.
